XHTML Markup (Transitional, Strict, or Modular)

Content destined for presentation is encoded for Web Browsers based on the W3C Web Standards for validity and well-formed-ness. Markup was previously done using the HTML standard (descendant of SGML), but in recent times, XHTML (qualifies as valid XML) has become the new standard for encoding web content for browser processing and presentation.
