The visitors you want do not go to your homepage

Organic search is king, it gets relevant traffic to the right pages on your site at no cost to you (compared to Pay-per-click search marketing)!
The homepage is not keyword dense, and so it is rarely part fo relevant search results.

A fact that is supported by a great deal or research and logical reasoning is the idea that the homepage is no-longer the first page that web visitors will see especially if they are arriving at your site from an organic search result. Organic search logic will lead your visitors to the page that has content that is most relevant to the search phrase provided by the user. As a marketer and content creator, you should therefore seek to place your content on a page that already have relevant focus. This will not only reinforce the overall theme of that page and enhance the point of focus of your website, but it will also ensure that your content will be seen and found by people who are interested in the topic.

As it is, the homepage often lacks a single, or a few strong themes (by the nature of its role as a unifying page), and as a result of all content creators in an organization lobbying to get their content somewhere on the homepage... If you really think of it, you should not waste your time and resources struggling to get space on the homepage or above the fold
